Tribute to Mark Stokes
It is with great sadness that I have to announce that Mark Stokes, a dear friend and member of the Tri2O Triathlon Club passed away while competing in the Triathlon World Championships in Torremolinos, Spain on 17th October 2024.
Mark was a kind and generous gentleman and athlete who was an integral and very supportive member of our Triathlon Club. Mark’s contribution to Triathlon and our club will not be forgotten and whilst we are currently mourning the loss of our dear friend we will in due course find a suitable way to honor his memory. In the meantime, our heartfelt sympathy, and thoughts are with Mark’s family and friends.
RIP Mark.

For the second year in a row, Age Group News chose to award the Lifetime Achievement Award. For an athlete who is no longer with us, but whom left an indelible mark on our community.
This year’s award goes to Mark Stokes – who lost his life representing GB at the World Championships in Torremolinos.
Accepting the award, Mark’s wife and coach shared a few words:
“Mark worked SO hard to achieve his dream of qualifying to represent his country, and the rightful pride he felt wearing that GB trisuit. As part of Tri2O Triathlon Club, he was always interested in how people were getting on, wishing everyone luck for their races, and was a friend and support to us all. To everything, he went above and beyond. Wholeheartedly, thoughtfully, with kindness, with reflection and with enthusiasm. I will forever think of him when I holler on my winter swims, and miss him.” – Georgia Jackson (Coach)
“Mark had to stop playing rugby following a knee injury and became quite unfit. His hip began to deteriorate from rugby and he developed high blood pressure and diabetes. All of this was a wake up call. He went back to his first love of swimming whilst waiting for a hip operation. Once he had his new hip, he progressed to cycling and joined the Tri20 club. Mark was so proud to have represented GB in his age group at Madrid, Vichy and his final event at Torremolinos. I’m honoured to accept this award on Mark’s behalf, in his eternal memory” – Joanne Stokes
